The Winnipeg Jets scored 3 times in the first period for only the second time this season, added 2 more in the middle frame, and tacked on a single in the 3rd period for a convincing 6-1 win over the visiting Colorado Avalanche.
The Avalanche scored with just 15.4 seconds left to ruin the shutout bid for Connor Hellebuyck who made 12 of his 22 saves in the final 20 minutes.
Rookie Patrik Laine scored his team leading 32nd goal of the season less than 4 1/2 minutes into the game. Captain Blake Wheeler added a power play goal, beating Winnipegger Cal Pickard for his 20th just before the midway mark of the period.
15 seconds later, Laine set up linemate Mark Scheifele at the left side post for his 27th. Ben Chiarot ended a 94 game goal less streak 7:03 into the second period, and 2 minutes and 2 seconds later, Nikolaj Ehlers ended Pickard’s night by finishing off a beautiful setup from Wheeler for his 21st goal of the season.
Jacob Trouba finished off a balanced attack for the Jets, becoming the 6th different goal scorer on the night when he banged in his own rebound off the glass behind the Colorado net. Wheeler and Ehlers led the way offensively with 1-2-3 apiece.
A concern for the Jets coming out of the second period was the status of centre Andrew Copp who suffered what appeared to be a right knee injury late in the second period in an open ice knee on knee collision with Avalanche Forward Joe Colborne who was not penalized on the play. Copp returned to play in the third.
The Jets climb back to .500 at 30-30-6 heading into Monday Night’s 7pm tilt versus San Jose to kick off the back half of this season high 6 game home stand.
