Winnipeg – The U of M Bison Men’s Basketball Team’s first appearance in 31 years at the National Final 8 Tournament will not result in a championship. The Bisons dropped a 63-53 decision to Quebec Champion McGill Redmen on Thursday afternoon at the Halifax Metro Centre.
The normally high scoring Bison offense could not get going against the Redmen and their renowned suffocating defense. Manitoba was able to jump out to a very, very, early 4-0 lead. But McGill quickly tied the score and grabbed the lead for good before the game was even more 4 minutes old.
The Bisons were out rebounded 47-34, and while each team committed 14 turnovers, the Redmen managed their mistakes a little more effectively by outscoring the U of M 15-9 off turnovers.
McGill now moves on to play Carleton in the Semifinals on Saturday while the Bisons take on Calgary in a consolation side semi beginning at 4 p.m. Winnipeg time on Friday Afternoon.
