Winnipeg – There was the potential for a five way tie for first place heading into Friday Morning’s Final Round Robin Draw of the 2017 Brier in St. John’s. So crowded was it at the top of the standings, there was also a potential scenario for six teams to make the playoffs.
But Manitoba’s Mike McEwen and Kevin Koe of Team Canada made sure neither of those things happened. McEwen, playing a very patient game. clinched top spot at 9-2 with a 5-2 win over Jean Michel Menard of Quebec. Hometown favorite Brad Gushue also wound up at 9-2 after defeating Jamie Murphy of Nova Scotia 6-3. But McEwen will have the hammer for tonight’s 5:30 p.m. Page 1-2 playoff by virture of his 8-4 win over the Newfoundland-Labrador rink in Draw 3 last Sunday Morning.

Koe eked out a 7-6 win over a stubborn New Brunswick team. Mike Kennedy’s crew might go down in history as the best ever 1-10 team at the Brier, with seven of those ten losses by 2 points or less.
Team Canada and Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs tied for third place at 8-3 and will square off in the 3-4 Page Playoff Game at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday Afternoon. The defending champs will have the hammer after beating the reigning Olympic Men’s Champs 6-4 last Sunday Morning as well.
