EDMONTON – A magical season for the Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball team will not include a medal at nationals.
The 2nd-ranked Bisons lost in four sets to 7th-ranked and host Alberta Friday night.
The loss slots Manitoba into the consolation bracket, meaning the best they can finish is 5th. In 27 previous appearances at nationals, the program has never finished worse than 5th.
“Very disappointed as we knew it was a tough opponent and we didn’t perform to the best of our abilities tonight. Alberta played well but we didn’t,” said head coach Garth Pischke. “That was not our best match of the year. We have been more consistent serving and receiving this year and it wasn’t there tonight.”
The Bisons set a program record with a 20 match win streak this season but have lost four of five matches since, including the Canada West gold medal game to Trinity Western.
The U of M will now take on the University of New Brunswick in a consolation semifinal at 3:30 p.m.
