Wednesday marked one year since Brian Pallister took over as Premier of Manitoba in a landslide victory against Greg Selinger and the Manitoba NDP.
Pallister marked the occasion with a speech to the mostly pro-business crowd at the RBC Convention Centre.
When asked what comes to mind when he looks back on the last year, Pallister brought up what he calls the “monumental challenge” his government faces.
“I’m reminded about the joke about how a mouse eats an elephant – one bite at a time,” Pallister said. “I hope we’re stronger than that mouse and I know that the process will take time but we’ve taken steps to move in the right direction in our first year.”
Pallister had a message for those who feel he isn’t moving fast enough to reduce the deficit. He said his government could move faster but it would mean higher taxes.
However Pallister did reaffirm his pledge to lower the PST within his first term.
