Officials say armed men have abducted three international aid workers in Sudan's Darfur region, including a Canadian nurse.
A spokesman for U-N peacekeepers in Khartoum says the kidnappings took place yesterday in north Darfur, about 200 kilometres west of the city of al-Fasher.
Noureddine Mezni says the kidnapped workers are from the Doctors Without Borders Belgian branch and they were abducted from their offices in the Saraf Umra area. A spokeswoman for the aid group in Nairobi, Kenya says armed men came into the compound last night, taking a Canadian nurse, an Italian doctor, a French co-ordinator and two Sudanese.
Susan Sandars says the two Sudanese were later released. She says the aid group has no information on the motive for the kidnappings or the whereabouts of the three aid workers.
A Sudanese official says the three foreign aid workers were able to call their colleagues at Doctors Without Borders after the kidnapping to assure them they are in good health.
The official says the two Sudanese workers have been interrogated by police but couldn't identify who kidnapped them. (The Associated Press, ccg)
