Shortage of rental housing: FCM report
12:05pm

7/4/2012

A new report is raising the issue of a shortage of rental housing.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities says the cost of renting is up 20 per cent since 2000 and the number of rental units are declining.

The average rent for a two bedroom apartment in Edmonton is $999 about $225 above the national average.

Edmonton's rental vacancy rate two years ago was at 4.3 per cent, which is not bad, considering the national average is 3.1 per cent.  If you're planning on moving to Winnipeg, it could be difficult to find a home as the vacancy rate there is only 0.9 per cent.

The average price for a new house in Vancouver is $1.4 million, which is almost $1 million more than the price of a new house in Edmonton. (ks)
