St. Joes to review internal processes following West 5th murder
Ken Mann
5/24/2012

There will be a review of internal procedures following a deadly alteraction on a soccer field outside of Hamilton's treatment hospital for those with mental illness.

Officials at St. Joseph's Healthcare add that both the accused and the victim had privileges to be on the grounds of the West 5th site at the time of Wednesday night's murder.

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gary Chiamowitz stresses that balancing the competing obligations of protection of the public against a patient's right to rehabilitation is an ongoing assessment and a difficult task.

St. Joseph's Healthcare President Dr. David Higgins adds that both patients had been at the facility for a significant period of time, were "well known to us" and "had been evaluated thoroughly".

32 year old Tyler Michael Valcheff is charged with second degree murder in the case.

The victim of Wednesday night's homicide is identified as 30 year old Michael Brewer.  Hamilton Police say he died of blunt force trauma.
