Central Park residents calling for environmental assessment
Hamilton Spectator
6/13/2012

Residents near Central Park in the Bay and Cannon area want to know if their greenspace is really "green".

The Central Neighbourhood Association, led by blogger Matt Jelly wants the city to conduct an environmental assessment.

Jelly argues not enough is known about the kind of clean up that was done before the industrial land was turned into a park in 1981.

Jelly says some longtime neighbourhood residents have reported a petroleum odour coming from patches in the soil in recent years.

The land was once home to Currie Products which also operated on the contaminated site at 350 Wentworth St. N. before going bankrupt in 1989.
