Hamilton students still below average in literacy
Jay McQueen
6/13/2012

Grade 10 students in Hamilton are still below the provincial average when it comes to literacy.

That's according to Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test results released today by the Education Quality and Accountability Office.

Seventy-seven percent of students who wrote the test at the public board passed this time around, compared to 79 percent a year ago.

At the catholic board, 81 percent of students passed, down from 82 percent last year.

The provincial pass rate is down by one percent, year-over-year, to 82 percent.

A 93 percent participation rate among catholic board students matches the provincial average, compared with a rate of 90 percent for public board students.

The results are used for planning at the student, school, board and provincial levels.
