Priest assault victim surprised accused was allowed to leave country
Hamilton Spectator
7/12/2012

Word that Father Jose Silva had been allowed to leave Canada before sexual assault allegations were heard in court has come as a surprise to the alleged victim in this case.

The man, whose name is protected, was 18 at the time of the alleged incident.

He says he was warned that Silva's departure to Brazil was a possibility in April but was not told by the Crown that it had happened in May.

The teen feels the deal is wrong and that the case should have gone to court.

Meantime, Silva is reported to be in a treatment facility in Brazil and has been suspended from his duties.

The deal that saw Silva's passport returned so he could leave Canada is under review by the Ontario Attorney General's office.
