Researchers at McMaster University are getting more than $4.6 in funding from the provincial government.
The university says it will go towards 14 ground breaking research projects.
One of the projects involves producting better lithium batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles.
Another project is aimed at identifying activities and nutrition that can lead to improved muscle mass, particularly in people who are aging.
The McGuinty government says supporting this research is part of its plan to make innovation a driving force in Ontario's economy.
