The Brantford fire department is in mourning today.
Captain Dave Cartmel, a 27 year veteran of the department, passed away yesterday morning at a hospice in Brantford.
Officials say Cartmel died as the result of an illness that was deemed under Presumptive Legislation related to his job.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
He is survived by his wife and their two sons.
