Burlington Street is the second worst road in Ontario
Burlington Street in Hamilton is the second worst road in Ontario.It is second on the CAA's annual Worst Roads list, after a third place finish last year.For the second year in a row, Toronto's Dufferin Street has been named the worst road in Ontario.The road is notorious for potholes and its crumbling condition.The list is based on results of an online poll that was conducted on CAA South Central Ontario’s website.2013 CAA Top 10 Worst Roads List1. Hamilton men freed from Dominican jail
Two Hamilton men, jailed in a Dominican Republic prison for three weeks, have been freed.Charges relating to a fight at a resort have been dropped against 34-year-old Nick Miele and his 18-year-old cousin Ben Costantini.Both men were freed at about 6:30 yesterday evening and plan to fly home to Canada today.Nick's wife, Stacey Vernon, tells the Spectator "They're really happy, but they are still really traumatized."She and nine other family members and friends stayed in the Dominican Republic to support the two men through their ordeal.The family claims the two men were wrongfully arrested following a fight that left a Montreal man seriously injured.The prosecution and the lawyer representing the two men had reached an agreement to drop a charge of physical aggression.They were facing a two-year sentence.The family complained the two men were kept in a prison in deplorable conditions, but Dominican Republic officials said it was a state-of-the-art facility.The first thing Miele and Costantini did after being freed was take a hot shower, because the showers in the prison only lasted five minutes and had cold water.Canada's Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Diane Ablonczy has issued a ...

Ticats to face rookie laden Bombers
The Ticats are gearing up for their second and final pre-season game on Thursday night.It will mark the team's first ever game in Guelph, when they host the Blue Bombers at Alumni Stadium.Quarterback Henry Burris is expected to start against Winnipeg, and the same can be said for other veterans who didn't play last week in Montreal. Man charged following pursuit with cops
A Burlington man faces a long list of charges after a wild pursuit involving Halton police.It started just before 8:30 last night when one man threatened another with a weapon in downtown Burlington.A short time later, two officers pulled up behind the suspect, who sped away against a red light.During a brief pursuit, the suspect drove directly at an officer, who managed to avoid a head-on crash.Police say the suspect vehicle ran a red at Brant Street and Plains Road East and collided with two vehicles before smashing into a light standard.The suspect bailed from the car by was arrested seconds later.22-year-old Joshua Farray is charged with, among other things, flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.He has a bail hearing today.A 48-year-old Burlington woman and her 11-year-old son suffered minor injuries, while a 23-year-old Burlington man was not injured, in the crash at Brant and Plains Road.

Measles warning issued in Burlington
Health officials have issued a measles warning in Burlington.Halton Region's health department says three cases of measles have been confirmed in the city.It says people who visited any of three locations on June 8 may have been exposed.Those locations are SportChek in Burlington Mall, The Collector's Vault near New Street and Guelph Line, and Al's Source for Sports on Fairview Street.Health officials say all three cases are in children from one family who may have contracted it by travelling out of the province.Medical officer of health Dr. Bob Nosal says people who have measles must be isolated while they're sick, and for four full days after the rash first appears.Anyone born after 1970 who has not had two doses of measles vaccine is considered susceptible.Measles can cause middle ear infections, pneumonia and inflammation of the brain.Despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine, the World Health Organization says measles remains one of the leading causes of death among younger children.About 158-thousand people died from measles in 2011, most of them were children under five.

Liquor sales rise for 18th straight year
Ontarians keep drinking more. The L-C-B-O is reporting net sales of more than 4.8 billion dollars for 2012-13, up 182 million dollars or 3.9 per cent fromthe previous year.    Broken down further ---- spirits sales rose 2.3%, Wine sales by 5.2% and beer sales were up 3.9%.  Sales of Ontario craft beers soared by 33%. The liquor board says it's the 18th straight year of record sales producing a divided to the province of 1.7 billion dollars.  L-C-B-O revenues go towards health care, education and infrastructure, among other public services. The L-C-B-O also says it refused service to 322 thousand people in 2012-13, 84% for being unable to prove legal drinking age.

Province blocks temporary police board appointment
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has ruled the temporary appointment of Councillor Lloyd Ferguson to the Hamilton Police Services Board "unlawful". City Council appointed Ferguson last week to replace suspended Councillor Terry Whitehead who's behaviour is under investigation. Police Board Chair Nancy DeGregorio admits they have no idea how long that probe will take. The appointment is ruled "unlawful" because the police services board can only have seven members -- and even though Whitehead is suspended and unable to perform his duties he is still considered a member. The board has temporarily postponed its June meeting which was to have been held on Monday afternoon.

New Dundas high school needs a name
Residents are being asked to select the name of the new high school to be built in Dundas. The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is closing Parkside next June and will spend 15 million dollars on extensive renovations to the current Highland Secondary School site. It will take suggestions about the new name until the end of September. The board is in the midst of a widespread review of school boundaries and where specialized programs are offered as it prepares to close seven high schools and open two new ones in 2015.

St. Joe's holding day of action
Federal cuts to refugee care are starting to hit Hamilton's hospitals.The Spectator reports St. Joseph's Healthcare is caring for at least one refugee a week with no health coverage.The cuts have cost the hospital 112-thousand dollars.St. Joe's is supporting a national day of action today, organized by doctors opposed to the cuts.Hamilton Health Sciences hasn't started tracking the costs yet.
