Rally planned in Smithers against Pacific Trail pipeline

First Nations and environmental activists from across the country are meeting Monday near Smithers to protest a new pipeline project.

The Pacific Trail Pipeline will carry natural gas from Willow Lake to Kitimat in a project many consider a stepping stone to Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.

Organizer Matt Loewen says the group will form an action camp with some First Nations vowing to block entry to the construction site, where work is set to start later this month.

"They asked for some solidarity from different groups and individuals in B.C. to come and have a strong show, saying that they're not going to consent to have a pipeline built across their land."
