A group of construction workers is taking Manitoba Hydro to court. In a release, the group says the legal action follows Hydro's decision to prevent employees from getting work on large-scale projects like Bipole III unless they join a union, and pay union dues. Harvey Miller of Merit Contractors Association says that violates their rights under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Miller says the Manitoba government enforced a similar policy during the floodway expansion project. He says many projects like construction of the MTS Centre and Manitoba Hydro headquarters were completed without master agreements or mandatory unionization.
