There's a report the suspect in the mass shootings at the Fort Hood army base in Texas was ``mortified'' by the idea of being deployed overseas.
The suspect -- a 39-year-old military psychiatrist -- is accused of killing 13 people and wounding more than 30 during a rampage on the massive base.
A cousin told the New York Times that Major Nidal Malik Hasan was traumatized by the stories he heard from soldiers who returned home with post-traumatic stress disorder.
He also says Hasan started having second thoughts about his military career after other soldiers harassed him for being a Muslim.
The motive for the shooting is not known, but law enforcement officials say Hasan had come to the attention of authorities six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
They say an official investigation was not opened.
