Last night on the Nighthawk we spoke with Arthur Schafer, who is a professor of Applied Ethics at the University of Manitoba. We discussed the issue of gender based abortion. That is, in some cultures it is not uncommon for families to abort when it has been determined that her fetus is female. China and India are the most common countries for this practice. The question I posed to Dr. Schafer is “Would it be permissible here”?

Can we say to women that they have the right to abortion without question in Canada and yet at the same time tell them that they should not terminate a pregnancy based on a child’s gender?
