Brayden Schenn’s return to the Wheat Kings has been delayed a day as the National Hockey League’s Los Angeles Kings have announced that the 18-year old center has been recalled on an Emergency Basis due to the hockey club’s recent rash of injuries.
Schenn, the Kings’ first round draft choice and fifth overall selection in last June’s NHL Entry Draft, was scheduled to return to Brandon today with Colby Robak and Scott Glennie after representing the Wheat Kings on Team WHL in last night’s Subway Super Series game in Victoria, B.C.
Instead, the Saskatoon product is expected to make his NHL regular season debut tonight in Vancouver when the Kings take on the Canucks at GM Place.
In order to play, the Kings have signed Schenn to an Amateur Try Out contract.
The Kings currently have seven players on the shelf including forwards Justin Williams, Brad Richardson, Ryan Smyth and Jarret Stoll, who missed Wednesday night’s 3-1 win in Edmonton due to a lower body injury.
Schenn, who is expected to be back in Brandon on Friday in time for the opening game of a weekend home and home series with Swift Current, currently leads the Wheat Kings in scoring with twelve goals and 28 points in 24 games. In 160 career games in Brandon, he has 199 points including 72 goals.
