    Metallica is back!

I think it’s more than a mere coincidence that Tony Bennett played Winnipeg the night after Metallica.  The Godfathers of Thrash blessed the MTS Centre with their presence for the first time since 2004.  And yes, the term Godfathers is appropriate, even though they weren’t the first.  But please, don’t ask me to figure out who the first was.  The nerd in me will be unleashed; could be Venom, or Kreator, Diamond Head, any of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands.  Heck, even Black Sabbath (Neon Knights, anyone?)

Much like Bennett, Metallica is the gold standard of their genre.  Metallica brings fan of all genres of music together.  Many people who love Metallica don’t even enjoy other metal music.  Example, the copy of the Black Album that I own used to belong to my dad!  I’m not implying ...

    Summer?! Summer?! Bueller?!

So yesterday was Manitoba day.  Ok, hands up, how many of you remembered?  I did (thank you Larry MacIntosh!).  Seriously though, the weather may be crummy right now.  I think the best description of a day like today comes from The Weakerthans song One Great City, “a darker gray is breaking through a lighter one.”  Please don’t fret though; the sun will come out…well, eventually.  Don’t bet your bottom dollar.  So while you’re sitting on your soaked deck, under a parasol, wearing a jacket AND shorts (it’s ok to admit it.  I’ve done the jacket and shorts combo) here are a few things you can look forward to this summer.

    36th Annual Winnipeg Folk Fest

The rite of passage for many Winnipeggers is ready to folk n’ roll July 9-12 at Birds Hill Park.  The true ...

10 Reasons Why I Love Playoff Hockey

10 Reasons I Love Playoff Hockey

    10.   “I can’t really hear what Jeremy says, because I got my two Stanley Cup rings plugging my ear.”  - Patrick Roy in 1996, responding to trash talk from Mr. Roenick.

    9.   Watching a playoff “Greatest Hits” package and slowly realizing that every other hit is being delivered by Scott Stevens.

    8.   Quadruple OT, because after playing two and a half games in one night, a fluky goal always ends it.

    7.   Buffalo Sabres goon Brad May scoring the OT winner versus the Boston Bruins in 1993, while Buffalo play-by-play man Rick Jenerette shouts “May Day!” over and over again.

    6.   The White Out/The Red Mile/Octopi/Plastic Rats, etc.

    5.   Playoff heroes come in all sizes, from Theoren Fleury to Uwe Krupp.

    4.   Playoff beards, from the rookies ...

    Mastodon w/Kylesa and Intronaut

Well, it’s official: Prog-rock is now a viable option for metal bands. Sure, we’ve had bands that have been dabbling for years. Jane’s Addiction and Tool have had their moments. Heck, King Crimson opened for Tool on one tour. Sure, Dream Theater has put out more 6-song, 80-minute albums than I can count. And lest we forget, the awesome power that is Rush. But never have such an all-out, heavy, and I mean heavy, metal band done what Atlanta, GA’s Mastodon have with their new album Crack The Skye. Why do I spout such hyperbole about the new disc? Because that’s what Mastodon opened their set with, the entire album! 50 minutes and 39 seconds of epic metal over-indulgence. This was accompanied by trippy videos which admittedly resembled a film students’ silent re-interpretation of Lord of the Rings. I mean the whole deal. Bearded king, cloaked warriors, mountain ...
