'Buy American' breakthrough not ideal for local manufacturer
CJOB News Team reporting
2/5/2010

There's a breakthrough on 'Buy American'... but it's not for everybody.

Trade Minister Peter Van Loan says Canadian companies will be exempt from those provisions in Washington's economic stimulus package.

Under that package, billions are being spent on highways... something that should provide a boon to local manufacturer Brett Pooles, whose company produces couplers for traffic poles.

But Pooles tells CJOB... the devil is in the details, or in this case, the 'nuts and bolts'...

Pooles says he gets around the issue by outsourcing the manufacturing of parts to US companies, but he says the process is cumbersome and costly.

Van Loan says Canada will continue to push for a permanent exemption.
