Winnipeg Police Chief Devon Clunis says an announcement about the future of the police helicopter will come in a few weeks.
Clunis would not divulge the nature of the discussions happening right now.
The province funds the chopper’s operating costs.
If the Progressive Conservatives are elected in the spring, Justice Critic Kelvin Goertzen says they would discuss its worth with police and the city.
“To determine if they feel that it’s providing good value for money in their efforts to keep Winnipeg safe or maybe there’s other things they believe similar funding could be used for.”
The Liberals say they would never eliminate funding without a discussion about its value with police.
The NDP says it is committed to funding the helicopter for many years, but adds an outside review will eventually be conducted.
Clunis says there is value in having a chopper, but in the end it might just come down to balancing the books.
