A warming hut on the Red River at the Forks is drying off after it was surrounded by a huge pool of water on top of the ice.
Though it looked to skaters like the hut was sinking into the river, it wasn’t.
Chelsea Thompson of the Forks says a crack formed into the ice beneath the hut and water moved up the crack, pooling on top of the ice.
“It sort of gave you the illusion it was sinking but the hut itself is still sitting on more than a foot of ice. The water was just pooling onto making it look dangerous.”
Thomson says crews have pulled the hut out of the very large puddle and cordoned off the water.
The Red River Mutual Trail is still open. No one’s safety was ever in jeopardy.
