The Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team only managed 11 shots but made them count in a 3-1 win over Calgary in game one of their best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series.
Warren Callis, Brett Brooks and Shaq Merasty scored for the Bisons while Justin Paulic was outstanding in net, turning away 32 Dinos shots in the win. Manitoba can wrap up the series at 7 p.m. tonight at Wayne Fleming Arena.
The Bisons women started their playoff quest on the road and lost 3-0 to Saskatchewan. That means they will be facing elimination tonight against the Huskies.
Top Volleyball Teams Clash
The 4th-ranked Bisons men’s volleyball team got a huge road win, knocking off the 3rd-ranked Dinos 3-1 in Calgary. Meanwhile the 5th-ranked Winnipeg Wesmen men’s team held their own against the best team in the country, but lost a tough five-setter to #1 Alberta.
In women’s volleyball 4th-ranked Alberta disposed of the Wesmen in four sets while the Calgary women’s team also got a four-set win over the Bisons.
Today marks the final day of Canada West regular season action with the top eight teams making the playoffs. The Bisons men have clinched second place in while the Wesmen are currently tied for 4th with Saskatchewan. Both the Bisons and Wesmen women’s teams will miss the playoffs.
