It was a good second day of the Brier in Ottawa on Sunday for Mike McEwen. The Manitoba champ began the day evening his record at 1-1 with a 6-2, eight end victory over Glenn Howard of Ontario. Then in the evening draw, the McEwen rink improved to 2-1 with a 6-3 victory over Mike Kennedy of New Brunswick.
Big ends were the difference in both wins. McEwen picked up a three in the seventh against Ontario when Howard was heavy with his draw and sailed his shot to the back of the 12 foot ring. And the Manitoba crew took control of the evening game by scoring three in the sixth end to snap a 1-all tie.
McEwen is tied for third place with Howard, Newfoundland-Labrador’s Brad Gushue, and Kevin Koe of Alberta behind Team Canada’s Pat Simmons and Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario who share top spot at 3-0. And Manitoba’s only game on Monday will be against Alberta’s Koe during the 6:30 p.m. evening draw.
