Officials thought she had been mauled by a bear or another wild animal, but police ruled the death a homicide.
Early last month, investigators travelled to the first nation and collected DNA samples from men between 15 and 66 years old.
There’s no word if the samples, that could have numbered up to 2,000, led to the arrest.
Police say the male was arrested without incident and is in custody.
“While we understand that this arrest will generate a lot of questions, we are not in a position to provide further information at this time as there are a number of investigative steps currently being undertaken, ” said Sargeant Bert Paquet.
More information is expected tomorrow.
