Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has died at age 46 after a battle with cancer.
The Ford family has confirmed his death today, 18 months after doctors discovered a softball-sized malignant tumour in his abdomen.
Ford’s time as mayor featured a series of high-profile incidents that turned him into an international celebrity. There were slurs against minorities, lewd remarks about his sex life and his admission of crack cocaine and alcohol abuse.
The illness forced him to withdraw from his bid for re-election as mayor. He ran instead for a seat on city council, winning in a landslide.
Despite his antics in office, he was admired by his supporters for his average Joe persona.
Ford leaves behind a wife and two children.
