It’s another sign the city’s proposed curbside pickup plan for organics could end up trashed.
St. Vital Councillor Brian Mayes says he is supporting a motion to suspend a proposal to introduce a third bin for organic kitchen waste collection, which could cost homeowners an extra hundred dollars a year.
However, he tells 680 CJOB he doesn’t want to scrap the idea altogether, and suggests starting with schools:
“I think most of us on Council want to do something to promote composting and organic pickup, and I thought, well, this could be an option. Let’s try to work with the school divisions, maybe we could start a program where we pick up at the various schools.”
Mayes is the chair of the city’s Water, Waste, Riverbank Management and Environment Committee, which will debate the green bin motion on Thursday.
