Crown attorneys are wrapping up their case against a Winnipeg woman who allegedly stole money from her dying niece’s trust fund.
Sheryl Matheson, 42, was arrest in March 2011 after police said she had withdrawn thousands of dollars from the account and used it for personal purchases.
Her niece, Jessica Bondar, 19, died a few weeks later in a Montreal hospital. Bondar had been battling health issues for two years after suffering heart failure due to complications from the flu.
On Monday, prosecutors called their final witness, but are still trying to convince the judge to allow Bondar’s videotaped statement she gave to police before she died.
Matheson’s lawyer have questioned the evidence and argued it was unreliable because of the medication affecting Bondar’s state of mind.
It’s unclear when the judge will make his decision on allowing the statement to be admissible as evidence.
The trial is expected to last for the rest of the week.
