Anyone who watched the 2009 Allan Cup final in Steinbach must have thought they entered a time machine Saturday.
The host South East Prairie Thunder lost that year’s title game to the Bentley Generals 4-3 in double overtime.
While it only took one OT this time around, the Generals once again broke the hearts of the host team 4-3 to capture Canada’s senior AAA hockey championship.
The Thunder had three separate one-goal leads but could never distance themselves. Carter Rigby scored the game-winner 15:47 into the extra frame.
This marks the third title for Bentley in the last eight years, and also provides some revenge after the Thunder won last year’s championship over the Generals. It is also the seventh Allan Cup for the province of Alberta.
