A man has lost part of his finger while he was in Winnipeg Police custody.
Manitoba’s police watchdog is now looking into the incident that happened on March 25th at the Main Street Project detoxification centre.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says the man was intoxicated and grabbed the cell door as it was being closed by officers. One of his fingers was partially amputated.
He was treated in hospital and released.
“Under the Police Services Act, the IIU is required to investigate whenever serious injuries may have resulted from the actions of a police officers,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“Serious injuries, as defined in regulations, include the loss of any part of the body.”
The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
