A woman puts a black man into a detergent-filled washing machine and the soap washes away his skin pigment, making him look Chinese when he exits the machine. Is this the most racist ad, or is everyone reading too much into it, like its creators say?
So the Chinese laundry detergent maker has since apologized for this ad, sort of. Shanghai Leishang Cosmetics Ltd. Co. says it strongly shuns and condemns racial discrimination, but went on to blame international media for making the ad into more than what it is.
“We express regret that the ad should have caused a controversy,” the statement read. “But we will not shun responsibility for controversial content.”
“We express our apology for the harm caused to the African people because of the spread of the ad and the over-amplification by the media.
“We sincerely hope the public and the media will not over-read it.”
