I don’t know about you but….I don’t like bugs. Which truly is a bit funny given how I’m somewhat of an outdoors woman–doing lots of fishing and camping. I can stand things like mosquito’s and flies. You know the bugs that don’t “hurt” you or make you squeamish…..but there are some bugs I truly have a problem with….and one of them is what’s been wriggling around Winnipeg lately. Forest tent caterpillars are far from a threat to humans. They don’t sting you–they don’t bite. But, they’re gross. And right now the city is crawling with them. We were warned that this would be a bad year, but as I scrolled through my social media news-feed on the weekend, many of you were astounded at just how many are now on city streets, lamp-posts, sidewalks, businesses and yes–your own home. For a “worm” that is supposed to be living in a tree?…they seem to be everywhere but ! On Winnipeg’s Morning News today, we spoke with former City Entomologist Taz Stuart. For those like myself hoping the caterpillar Armageddon would soon be over?…sorry to say we’ve got 4-6 weeks of sharing space with these creatures. I guess we can take solace in the fact that we are not quite as bad as our neighbor’s to the west. In Saskatchewan, the problem in some towns has been so bad this year?…people have literally been using their snowblowers to clear the creatures away.
By the way, I noticed all kinds of “remedy’s” online this weekend in how to get these bugs off your trees and homes. Sadly, many are completely useless and non-effective according to Taz Stuart. Your best bet if you really want to get rid of them is to head to a place like Poulin’s Exterminators and they’ve got a couple of different products to help you out.
Uggg….4-6 weeks of dealing with this … did I mention that?
