WINNIPEG – Another place to skate outside in the winter could be on the way.
The Exchange District BIZ wants to put in a rink at Old Market Square.
While it’s a hotspot in the summer, the area is more or less dead once the snow falls.
Brian Timmerman with the BIZ suggests they could program all kinds of events there in the winter, but admits they can’t do it alone
“We lack the resources to create and maintain an ice surface. The city would need to prepare the green space for ice. They would need to provide water and expertise to flood the space, and once made would need to provide maintenance in order to keep the ice surface in relatively good shape.”
Timmerman couldn’t say how much that would cost. He also says the BIZ could only provide light snow removal, i.e. a quick shovel every morning.
“Whether it be a winter concert, curling or broomball, if the city will make the commitment to prepare, make and maintain an ice surface, the BIZ is prepared to program that space all year round.”
Timmerman made his presentation to the Community Services Committee today at City Hall. When it was pointed out to him that Transcona put in a successful rink on its own dime, Timmerman admitted he was not aware they had did that.
