A very sad ending to the search for a little girl.
Calgary police believe they have found the body of five-year-old Taliyah Leigh Marsman.
Searchers found a body late Thursday afternoon on a rural property east of Chestermere.
Inspector Don Coleman says this was not the ending they were hoping for.
“It’s definitely disappointing to say the least. The family is devastated and there’s still a ton of work to do investigationally. The investigators were obviously impacted, but there’s lots of work to still do,” he said.
Edward Downey, 46, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, in the deaths of Taliyah and her mother, 34-year-old Sara Baillie. He has an extensive criminal history.
Police say Baillie and Taliyah knew the man. It’s unclear whether or not Taliyah’s father knew him.
The motive for the killings are unclear. No other suspects are being sought.
Police took Downey into custody for questioning Wednesday night at a Calgary strip mall. Information they received led to the search.
An autopsy will be done on the body today. Cause of death has not yet been determined.
Calgary police thanked everyone who helped in the search for the little girl since the Amber Alert was issued earlier this week.
