Winnipeg – Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have dynamic Weston Dressler back in their lineup when they visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their annual Labor Day Weekend Classic game. But Dressler’s ex-Saskatchewan teammate, receiver Ryan Smith, will sit out the game even though he is fully recovered from injury. The football club won’t confirm it, but it’s believed Smith is being held out so that he can finish his time on the 6-game injured list and not have his salary during that period count against the salary cap. Smith is eligible to come off the 6-game next week, in the meantime, Import Gerrard Sheppard will continue in the starting receiving corps while Thomas Mayo is dropped from the active roster to make room for Dressler.
Jermarcus Hardrick will return to the right tackle spot on the offensive line after missing two games. He will replace Manasse Foketi. And an ankle injury to veteran Canadian defensive tackle Jake Thomas in practice on Thursday has forced the club to bring in free agent Brandon Tennant. Tennant was a 5th round draft pick of Saskatchewan last yeare and played in 8 games for the Riders. The 6-2, 305 product of Laval will step right into the lineup and spell Keith Shologan occasionally during Sundays game.
Bombers haven’t won the Labor Day Classic since 2004. The broadcast on 680-CJOB begins at noon Sunday with a two-hour pre-game show.
