WINNIPEG – An 18 year veteran of Winnipeg Police accused of several criminal charges died in a car crash near Birds Hill Park Monday morning.
Multiple justice sources tell Global News Trent Milan died in the head-on crash between a pickup truck and a gravel truck on Garven Road between Highway 207 and Pine Ridge Road.
Milan, 42, was arrested in September following an investigation that dated back to 2010. He faced 34 charges, including: illegal possession of drugs and weapons, along with attempting to obstruct justice and breach of trust. Police also said Milan may have shared police information inappropriately.
The investigation commenced after ‘irregularities’ were found in Winnipeg Police’s various systems. At the time, Deputy Chief Danny Smyth called the incident ‘a dark chapter for Winnipeg Police.’
Milan was free on bail and on paid administrative leave while awaiting trial.
Winnipeg Police and the Winnipeg Police Association have both refused to comment at this time.
RCMP confirmed a 42 year old man died in the crash, but will not be releasing his name.
The driver of the gravel truck suffered minor injuries.
The cause is still under investigation.
