WINNIPEG – A fifth inmate has died this year while in custody at the Remand Centre.
This death happened in early September but has just come to light now.
John Hutton of the John Howard Society tells 680 CJOB this is an alarming number and he believes overcrowding at the Remand Centre could be a contributing factor.
“It’s a concern we have that there may be some underlying issues or systemic issues,” says Hutton. “We want to see that examined and we want to know that the province is looking into that. We’d like to know what those recommendations are.”
Hutton is calling on the province to launch a public inquiry and says the public has a right to know what is being done to change this.
