WINNIPEG – Most of the buildings at Kapyong Barracks will be demolished if the federal government has its way.
Only the housing won’t be torn down.
Dennis Meeches, chief of Long Plain First Nation tells 680 CJOB the seven First Nations involved with Kapyong agree with the decision because the buildings sat vacant for so many years.
“This has been on the table for quite some time,” says Meeches. “We know it needs to be done and that’s why we support the decision for the demolition of those buildings… not houses but the buildings.”
Meeches is optimistic about a tentative deal on the table although they have to work out a few issues with Peguis First Nation before they can get something finalized.
He expects a deal to be made in the “very near future”.
