WINNIPEG – A 32-year-old man is facing a long list of charges after a violent altercation with police officers on Monday in the North End.
Just after 3 p.m., officers responded to the call for a man acting “erratically” on Stella Avenue near Powers Street. They discovered he was wanted on a number of charges and was under the influence.
“This individual from my understanding does have a history of using illegal drugs or illicit drugs,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen. “But he was very aggressive and put these members at a very high risk situation.”
Officers on scene did try and arrest the suspect, but he resisted and began fighting back. At one point the suspect managed to grab an officer’s stun gun and use it against him.
He then tried to aim it at other officers during a physical altercation, but he was restrained.
Two officers suffered minor injuries.
“That could have easily been a firearm, but in this case it was a CEW (Conducted Electrical Weapon),” said Michalyshen. “We’re just thankful in the end that officers were able to rely on their training and the team dynamic and diffuse the situation.”
Serge Chartrand faces a slew of firearm charges along with resisting arrest, assaulting an officer and probation breach.
He remains in police custody.
