WINNIPEG — A busy start to the first day of the year for emergency crews in Winnipeg.
Around 11 a.m. Sunday, emergency crews were called to the scene of a fire in the 400 block of Bowman Avenue in East Kildonan.
Bowman Avenue was shut down to traffic as firefighters battled the blaze to prevent it from spreading.
“I grabbed my family and told everybody to get out of the house,” said Mike Harris, whose home is beside the one that went up in flames.
Harris and his family got out safe. There was some damage to the back of his house but his neighbour’s home is likely a total loss, said firefighters.
“It was a defensive fire, crews were not able to enter due to the fact the fire was so violent,” said Capt. Don Troschuk with the WFPS.
The fire appears to have started in the kitchen, said Troschuk.
The fire on the other side of the heavily damaged home was unscathed.
The total cost estimate for damages is not yet known.
