WINNIPEG – If the last name of the 2017 Manitoba Junior Women’s Curling Champion seems familiar, that’s because curling runs in her blood.
Laura Burtnyk and her rink out of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club took home the title with a thrilling 8-7 win over Kristy Watling, scoring two in the tenth to win.
Burtnyk, 20, is the daughter of two-time Brier champion Kerry Burtnyk.
On the men’s side, a major upset as two-time Canadian junior champ Braden Calvert lost to JT Ryan 7-3 in the final. Ryan, 18, whose dad Jeff played with Kerry Burtnyk, also curls out of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club.
The two rinks will now play in the Canadian Junior Championship in Victoria starting January 21.
