WINNIPEG – While police were apprehending the suspect involved in the death of a transit bus driver at the University of Manitoba early Tuesday morning, a member of the canine unit fell through the ice.
Police tracked down the suspect who was crossing the frozen Red River attempting to make it to St. Vital.
One officer returned to the scene afterward to gather evidence when he fell through the ice.
Constable Jason Michalyshen tells 680 CJOB he was submerged up to his armpits for at least a minute.
“There’s no question this member could’ve easily gone completely through and under the ice,” says Michalyshen. “Without a doubt, we could’ve easily been talking about another tragedy. Our member had a close call. All I can say is that we are so thankful that they’re okay.”
Michalyshen says the officer was able to pull himself out of the water and was medically cleared by paramedics.
