WINNIPEG – There’s a chance Canada’s next astronaut will be from Winnipeg.
In fact, it could be one of three local women all still in the running for the job.
The Canadian Space Agency has released it’s 32 finalists and among them are Allyson Hindle, Sara Spangelo and Michelle Whitty.
Hindle is an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and also studies animals living in extreme environments.
“I credit everything about where I am right now to growing up and going through the educational system in Winnipeg,” Hindle says. “I learned so much, I had so many great teachers, I had such great opportunities in university. All of those things helped propel me forward.”
Spangelo is Systems engineer for Google X and a co-founder of Swarm Technologies, which is working on the world’s smallest two-way communication satellites.
Whitty is a Captain in the Armed Forces and completing her family medicine residency.
Canada’s next astronaut will be revealed this summer.
