WINNIPEG – Transit driver appreciation day is today, though the city celebrated it yesterday.
It’s an opportunity to thank your transit driver and it’s hitting home in Winnipeg after bus driver Irvine Fraser was killed on the job a month ago.
However, transit union president John Callahan tells 680 CJOB transit officials are dragging their feet when it comes to improving safety on buses.
He describes a recent incident where a man was passed out in the back of a bus but it took 50 minutes before someone from dispatch was sent to take care of him.
“In the mean time, this guy’s fallen out of the seat and he’s sprawled out on the floor,” says Callahan. “People are walking over him to get in. That’s not the public service that we want out there.”
Callahan blasted transit administration for “making excuses for everything” although he says his conversations with city councillors have been productive.
