WINNIPEG – Just days after Manitoba Hydro uniforms and an ID card were stolen from a locked service yard, a suspicious person posing as a Hydro employee has been spotted in south Winnipeg.
Police say a man knocked on a door in Island Lakes. He was dressed in a Hydro uniform and asked to check the furnace.
Manitoba Hydro does not do random furnace inspections.
The homeowner asked him for ID and the man got back in his car and left.
The suspect is a white man, 6’1″, 25-30 years old with dark hair. He was driving an older model, maroon-coloured car.
Hydro says that an actual employee coming around to your home will likely be a meter reader, will be wearing blue pants, a matching jacket or shirt and a hat, and they will be carrying a grey laptop. They will also show you their ID when asked.
“If a homeowner or a resident has any doubts whatsoever about the identity of this person standing on their doorstep, don’t allow them entry into your home,” explains Bruce Owen with Manitoba Hydro. “Please call 204-480-5900 to confirm their identity.”
If something similar has happened to you or if you know anything about this man, call police right away.
